We often get asked what we like our clients to do before we show up on moving day! While we pride ourselves on being a full-service moving company that takes most of the work off of your to-do list, there are a few preparatory steps you can take to make our job easier. To make your move as stress-free, safe, and smooth as possible, we ask that you do the following 5 things before we arrive. These steps may not seem that crucial, but they will do wonders in making you feel more prepared and in control during your move. Every task you complete before we arrive will save time, trouble, and stress on moving day.
Task #1: Remove Any Items Not Coming with You
If there are certain items that you do not want to be moved to your new home, try to remove them before your movers show up. Unless directed otherwise, we will assume that everything still in your home needs to be loaded into our truck to be brought to your new location. Donate, sell, recycle, and throw out as many of your unwanted items as possible to keep things organized and open up more space for us to work. You can also set items aside and let our team know not to load them – we like to call this the “no-pack” room or section. This area should also include any items that are coming with you but are things that you want to move yourself like your survival box or day-to-day essentials.
Task #2: Pack and Label Boxes
If you’re caught up with our blog, then you already know how important proper packing and labelling are for a successful move. Do your best to label each packed box with their intended destination in your new home so that we know exactly where each will go. This will save our team a whole whack of time because we only have to handle items once, instead of playing a guessing game and then reorganizing boxes throughout the day. Save us from having to spin in circles trying to figure it all out! Don’t forget to clearly mark any of your fragile boxes as well so that we know to take additional care when handling them. Task #3: Clean Your Home and Furniture
We always recommend our clients clean everything going into our moving truck, simply because it is not a fun task to do so in your new home if you are hoping for a fresh start. You don’t want to drag dust from your old home into your new place if you don’t have to! When cleaning your items, make sure everything is dry afterwards to avoid any slips or moisture damage during the moving process. Unplug and clean appliances, wipe all surfaces, and remove and wash all linens so that you can start fresh in your new home. Don’t forget to empty any gas or oil from your gas-powered tools (like lawnmowers, snow-blowers, etc.) to prevent fires and leaks onto your other belongings.
Task #4: Prepare a Safe and Easy Path
Speaking of cleaning, try to keep your floors relatively clean and clutter-free for our movers. One of the first things we always do when we arrive at your home is lay down protective padding, so the more space we have to do this the better. Make sure we have a cleared pathway so that we can come in and out of your home while carrying your belongings. This will not only protect your home, but it will allow us to get the job done safely and efficiently without any trips, falls, or damaged items. Don’t forget to coordinate a parking spot for our truck! Have a plan in place for where you would like us to park (the closer to an entrance the better) and move any other vehicles out of the way before we arrive. If you live in an apartment or condo building, you can ask your landlord/manager for any rules when it comes to moving. Sometimes you will need to request a space for our truck and time to use the elevator.
Task #5: Hire Babysitters and Pet Sitters
While we have completed multiple moves with kids and pets present, we suggest hiring caretakers for moving day. This is more for your own stress levels and peace of mind – trust us when we say you do not want children or pets running around while we try to move your items. Our best moves happen when our clients can be fully present and focused on the task at hand; we never expect you to lift a thing, but we might need you to help answer any questions we have. An upset child or needy pet will only distract you from the task at hand: moving into your new home.
