The Top 10 Moving Tips For Your Next Move

The Top 10 Moving Tips For Your Next Move

You finally have the green light to move, and you’re incredibly excited!

But now you’re faced with the task of planning a successful move from your current place to a new one. There are a few different types of movers—those moving out of their parents’ home for the very first time, those moving to a new city and starting a brand new life, and those moving into a home they’ve been working towards, amongst many others. Whether it’s your first time moving or you’ve done it before, it’s good to be prepared with as much knowledge possible to make your move a smooth transition. Here are Deluxe Moving’s top 10 moving tips for handling your next move.

Moving Tip 1: Before you begin packing up your items, get rid of what you don’t need

Before you go through the bother of packing everything you own, go through your items and minimize the number of things you have. If there are items you no longer use or need, it’s a good time to give these items away or sell them. Think of this moving tip as a mini-cleanse for your home. With a good sort through, you’ll only be packing items you actually want in your new place!

Moving Tip 2: Get the Right Moving Supplies

The best way to do anything is to be ready and prepared. Before you start packing your items, you’ll need the right moving supplies and materials to be successful. If you need storage boxes, storage wrap, and packing tape, be sure to buy these at the beginning of the process.

You don’t want to be getting these items as you need them—it will be an extra hassle you don’t necessarily want. Get a little bit more than you think you’ll need. You can return any extra items you don’t use. Our moving company can help you with the materials you may need.

Moving Tip 3: Make Use Of Your Luggage and Bags

If you’re a traveller or just have a love of duffel bags, use your resources. Suitcases and duffel bags are the perfect moving solution. By filling up your empty suitcases and bags, you’ll save on money you would have otherwise spent on moving boxes!

Moving Tip 4: Label Your Bags and Boxes

Nothing is worse than shoving your items into random boxes and not knowing where to find them after a move. Take a proactive approach to your packing and moving experience. As you begin to pack away your items, be strategic. Label and organize your boxes according to whose items they are, what room they belong to, what the contents of the box are, and immediate need of the items after you move in.

That way, when you’re opening boxes after the move, you’ll know where items are and the immediacy of needing them.

Moving Tip 5: Take Precautions with Fragile Items

If you have particularly delicate items—like your grandmother’s Chinaware—be sure to give them extra attention in the move. Take the time to buy a protective wrap or extra packing paper to ensure that when these items go into boxes or bags that they’ll make it in one piece.

Moving Tip 6: Keep your Important Documents In One Place and On-Hand

Passports, driver’s licenses, health cards, banking statements, and information about your new place, should be kept with you. These are items that you may need at a moment’s notice, especially in emergencies, so it’s best to keep them all together.

It’s advisable not to pack these items away. Instead, keep the documents in a safe place—like in a bag that you can keep on you at all times, or leave it at a trusted person’s home.

Moving Tip 7: Keep Personal Items, Daily Items and Irreplaceable Items With You

Prepare a few bags with your daily essentials and personal items that you’ll need. This includes things like daily medications, hygiene items, clothing, weather accessories, laptop and phone chargers, and the electronics you use daily.

You’ll also want to ensure that you keep your irreplaceable items with you—like wedding rings and wallets.

Have these bags with you throughout the move. If you’re staying temporarily in a hotel or at a family/friends’ home, it will make your daily life a bit easier. Organize the bags as best you can and try not to overpack.

Moving Tip 8: Know The Schedule You’re Working With

This is an important tip for the time leading up to the move, the day you move out of your previous place, and the day you move into your new place. Knowing how much time you have to get tasks done can help you plan your time effectively and make any arrangements necessary—like who will take care of the dog on moving day, or when you’ll be getting the keys to your new place.

Moving Tip 9: If You Need Help with Packing or Moving, Host A Moving Party

If you have a group of friends or family who are willing to help you out, host a moving party! Have your family and friends help you pack away your items into designated boxes and bags. Keep with the same idea as if you were packing on your own and label the boxes. With the help of friends and family, the job will be done faster. If your friends and family are available to help you on the day of the move, that’s even better! Just make sure to show your appreciation for their work with some pizza and drinks.
